This tutorial will help the naive users in Customizing the Desktop and in changing the Desktop Background in Windows XP. Mostly Naive users want to have their own image or other favourite image as desktop wallpaper.
So, Here`s the tutorial to set your favourite wallpaper as desktop background and customise desktop in your own way.
You can select any wallpaper from the list provided in Windows XP or any other your own picture as well you can show/hide & change the desktop icons i.e. My Computer,My Documents, My Network Places, Recycle bin.
Change Desktop Background :
- Right Click on the Desktop >> Properties
- Click on Desktop tab.
- Select Picture from the list under Background to set as Desktop Background.
- Click on Browse... to choose any other picture i.e. your own image or your favourite wallpaper etc. and Select from directory where that is saved and Add to the list.
- Now, Click on Apply.Then Ok.
Note : The files , you can use as desktop background , must be with extensions
.bmp , .gif , .jpg , .png , .htm only.
Under Position Column, - Choose one of these Stretch , Tile , Centre .
Stretch - It streches the picture to the fullscreen. Picture will be shown on the full
screen.Picture may be blurred if it is of low quality.
Tile - Same Picture will be shown a no. of times in tile format.
Centre - Picture will be set in the centre of the desktop.
If you chose any file with .htm extenstion , it will automatically covers the full screen.
Note : After selecting any picture, when you choose Centre/Stretch/Tile- a preview
will be shown on the monitor screen above it.

Customize Desktop... :
This Option contains the Icons shown on Desktop i.e. My Computer,My Documents, My Network Places, Recycle bin.
You can change desktop icons here and also choose which icons must be on desktop or hide the icons from the desktop.
Alternative : If you want to set your own Picture or any other wallpaper as Desktop Background,
- Right Click on that Picture >> Choose Set as Desktop background.
